LEAD ARTIST – FLOTILLA

DAISY is seeking an experienced leading visual artist / maker for its project ‘Flotilla’, based on the life and work of James Henry Pullen. The project is funded by Arts Council England and is hosted in partnership with the Watts and Lightbox Galleries. The lead artist will have good making skills in a variety of media and the ability to lead and inspire others.

Our project is based upon an exhibition, ‘James Henry Pullen: Inmate – Inventor – Genius’ which opens at the Watts Gallery, Compton, Surrey on 19 June 2018.

DAISY will invite artists with disabilities from its networks to spend time at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village to visit the Pullen exhibition and then to create a flotilla of model fantasy craft in response to Pullen’s amazing artworks. An exhibition of the sculptures/models inspired by Pullen’s work will be shown as an installation called ‘Flotilla’, alongside the related commission of a textile wall piece at the Lightbox Gallery in Woking in October 2018.

The role of the Lead Artist will be to:

  • Lead DAISY workshops at the Watts Gallery and at DAISY member organisations across Surrey (equivalent to approx 10 days work)
  • To advise on the purchase and use of materials (we have a budget of £600)
  • To curate the Flotilla exhibition at the Lightbox Gallery, Woking (23 October – 4 November)

The artworks can be made from any medium, including found materials. Artists will be drawn from across the DAISY network and will bring to the project a wide variety of abilities, skills, insights and imagination. The role of the lead artist will be to enable, facilitate, coax, suggest, inspire and direct each project participant to make their best artistic response to the work of James Henry Pullen.

The lead artist will need to consider how each artwork will be presented to form part of a flotilla of model boats and fantasy craft that sail through the Art Fund Prize gallery space at the Lightbox. Each boat carrying the hopes and dreams of its maker into the future.

The lead artist will be supported throughout the project by a project manager, the team at Watts Gallery and the Lightbox. We have also engaged the services of a technician who will work alongside the lead artist to support the creation of the artworks.

Fee: £2,200 (+ up to £200 travel costs)

DAISY welcomes applications from artists with disabilities and, in line with positive action guidelines, will interview all disabled candidates who meet the minimum selection criteria.
