In 2019 DAiSY run a new exciting project with RHS Garden Wisley. Funded by Arts Council England, ‘The Apple Project’ offered 90 artists from Daisy organisations the opportunity to visit Wisley’s apple orchards and extensive archive, to observe how the orchard changed over the seasons, and explore the history and mythology of the iconic fruit.
The participants took part in over 40 workshops led by experienced arts practitioners in photography, print making, drawing and creative writing, developing a response to the seasonal changes in the orchard and information collected from the archive. The finished work was displayed at a curated exhibition as part of RHS Garden Wisley’s ‘Taste of Autumn’ Festival in October 2019.
We worked with three bursary awardees (photography, creative writing and printmaking) to develop their artistic practice. The work they produced was also included in the final exhibition.
Alongside the project various DAiSY organisations delivered other activities. With support from Councillor Stephen Spences devolved funding pot Creative Response produced an installation which was exhibited at RHS Garden Wisley.
In collaboration with Wisley’s ‘edibles’ team Ochre Print Studios delivered apple printing workshops, where participants tasted a slice of apple, then printed an image of the apple and wrote adjectives that described the taste around it. This work and the full Apple Project exhibition was exhibited at Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames during November 2019.
